The U.S. State Department is constantly updating its travel advisory for countries around the world. Although some places (such as Afghanistan, South Sudan and North Korea) have been on the Level 4 list for many years, others tend to change.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio promised to reevaluate the country’s current travel consultation during a recent visit to Jamaica. U.S. citizens often choose this destination because Jamaica’s breathtaking beaches and hotelsdelicious food and pop music.

However, In January 2024, the U.S. State Department issued a Level 3 consultation in Jamaica. Then it was updated in July of the same year, providing the following explanation:

Violent crimes occur throughout Jamaica. Tourist areas are often at lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country. The Jamaican government reported the highest homicide rate in the Western Hemisphere. Armed robbery and sexual assault are common.

But Jamaican officials now claim that the situation in the country has improved, prompting the United States to reconsider its travel advice.

Marco Rubio visited Kingston, the capital of Jamaica in late March 2025 and met with the country’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness, among other officials. After the meeting, Marco Rubio announced:

We promise (that is) that we will return and reevaluate travel consultations because they must currently make sure they reflect the reality of the new numbers and what the numbers show.

However, the U.S. Secretary of State also clarified that this does not necessarily mean Jamaica Will be Added to the US Travel Consulting Level 2 list, but the situation will be reassessed.

Nevertheless, local politicians shared their enthusiasm with the media. The country’s Prime Minister announced:

We are committed to collaborating to ensure that travel consultation reflects current reality and facilitates travel to Jamaica (…) I believe that the dialogue initiated today will lead to tangible results.

Tourism is one of the main sectors of Jamaica’s economy. Donovan White, director of the Jamaica Tourism Bureau Tourism Bureau, announced that U.S. tourists are the largest in the country, adding that the Caribbean Island welcomes more than 4 million visitors, most of whom are U.S. citizens in 2024.

Jamaica Tourism Minister Han. Edmund Bartlett also expressed his gratitude to the positive news, noting:

We are very grateful to Secretary Rubio for considering our current position on travel consultation is outdated. Jamaica and the United States have been in a close state for a long time, and our friendship remains strong.

Jamaica is currently in the US “Travel Advisory Level 3: Reconsider Travel” list

The country has experienced high levels of crime in the past few years, especially the homicide rate

Although it is a popular country among American vacationers and cruisers, not many people know that Jamaica is currently on the US Level 3 travel consultation list. This is just a level below The US Level 4 list features the world’s most dangerous countries, recently updated to add Iran.

The U.S. government has also issued a series of regulations to ensure the safety of its citizens traveling to Jamaica.

It is not clear whether Jamaica will be able to enter the US Level 2 travel consultation list.
