The two airlines launched Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) in February as the first airport on the U.S. side to operate as part of the partnership.

Now, as TPG first reported in January, Denver and Nashville are next.

Narrow partnership – First

Currently, the airline’s partnership – Southwest’s first partnership with international airlines is limited, although that will change throughout next year.

Currently, customers can book a link between the two airlines using Iceland Airlines website and certain third-party booking sites such as Expedia (but not yet a Southwest website).

This means you can:

  • Start a trip on a Southwest jet
  • Then, easily connect to Iceland Airlines flights to Rekyavik from BWI, DEN or BNA. Your luggage will also be transferred seamlessly
  • From there, you can even continue on the same itinerary to other destinations in Europe.

And, you will be able to pay cash and earn quick reward points on these bookings, or redeem points for your trip – which should be a big boost to the Southwest Points Utility.

Flights to Iceland

Starting with Iceland Airlines’ website, let’s say I want to make a March round trip from Dallas Love Stadium (DAL) (family airport in the southwest).

Iceland Airlines

As you can see, the Iceland Airlines website offers a trip that is a leg from DAL to the southwest BWI followed by a connected flight to Iceland Airlines’ BWI-TO-KEF LEGE.

Additionally, Iceland Airlines’ website may provide connections through Denver or Nashville, which will include in partnerships in the coming weeks.

This is a trip that starts in San Jose, California, which takes a Southwest flight to Denver and connects with Iceland Airlines to Iceland.

Iceland Airlines

If you book through a third-party online travel agency, Southwest Airlines has similar options after it recently began allowing Expedia Group Portfolio’s website to sell flights.

The following trips include Southwest Airlines from Dal to Den, then connected to Iceland Airlines.

Expedia

The airline notes that adding Denver only to the Interline agreement, which provides the possibility of a trip for more than three Southwest cities in the western United States.

Book flights to Europe

You can also technically book a trip to Europe through this partnership, although it may not be the most effective way to transatlantic. You have to go to BWI, Den or BNA, then go to KEF and then continue to Europe.

However, this is possible.

This is a trip that starts at Midway International Airport (MDW) in Chicago, Southwest and ends at Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London.

Iceland Airlines

You will fly southwest to Baltimore and then connect to Iceland Airlines for a Reykjavik flight. Once you reach the KEF, you can establish a standard connection before your last stop in Europe, or spend a day or two (or more) in Iceland as part of your stopover; you can use up to seven days of stopover.

The partnership is coming

With this partnership, routes with fewer partnerships should appear as airlines even bring the Southwest base online. And, as Southwest begins selling these itineraries through its own website, partnerships should become increasingly useful, especially once it allows for quick reward redemption of these trips.

Bottom line

Southwest’s new partnership with Iceland Airlines is officially live and booked through Iceland Airlines’ website and some third-party websites. Although it is limited now (not available for quick reward gains or redemptions at this time), it will be greatly expanded over the course of next year.

During this period, Southwest Airlines also plans to announce a second international airline partner, so stay tuned.
