In one of the videos, she tells how to ask a Canadian if it’s OK, which would be an unusual response.
“You don’t ask others if they’re OK – don’t do it,” she said.
Poppy then explains how British people often say hello to each other with this question, but if you say hello to Canadians in a “crazy look you get” way.
However, she didn’t realize it before moving, so when she met new colleagues at work, she learned the hard way.

But after asking her this question, she said the woman’s “whole behavior changed” and she offended her before looking up and saying “Yes?”. Full of confusion.
After five seconds of “embarrassing silence”, Poppy asked her new colleague to answer “Yes, why not?”.
She didn’t know why the woman would react in this way until her Canadian friends explained “You can’t say this to Canadians” because they interpreted it as an insult.
Poppy goes on to explain how this question has different meanings when you are in the UK in some social situations.
For example, she said if someone is “weird,” you might raise your eyebrows and answer “How are you?” as a way to highlight their strange behavior.
Canadians are familiar with the usage of this question, but don’t use it as a greeting, so it will only offend it.
Her friends told her that she should greet people in terms such as “How?”. Or “How are you?”
“It’s weird, but yes, I’d say it was the first cultural shock I had when I moved to Canada,” Poppy said in signing the video.
