Great Smoky Mountains have many less fortunate areas. For those who want to skip the crowdHeintooga Spur Road provides visitors with amazing views near the Blue Ridge Parkway.
With all the amazing locations, there are significant changes that are taking place. Among them are Great Smoky Mountains staff adds fences in the Whiteoak Sinks Area In an effort to protect the declining wild flowers.
There were other changes, and one of them was the main positive, as the beloved valley was finally reopened. We will take a closer look at the new announcement of the National Park service, and what the visitors can expect from the trail in the coming months.

Cataloochee has a rich history, and is surrounded by growing mountains. At higher heights, temperatures are usually slightly cooler than usual, according to National Park Service. The higher height is well worth the beautiful scenery that ignores the valley in the area. Locations include forest camping, a variety of routes and offering beautiful drive visitors.

Unfortunately, given the damage caused by Helene’s storm, the valley has been closed since September 2024, as the National Park service continues to repair the damage. Now, the CatalooChee section has reopened.
NPS wrote“On April 4 to 12 pm EST, the National Park Service (NPS) will reopen the CatalooChee Valley at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

CatalooChee Creek Road to the Old CatalooChee entrance bridge

Old Highway 284. Visitors will be able to drive the CatalooChee Valley access to Beech Grove School.
The park successfully deals with descending and dangerous trees around the road, while also recovering 60 miles from the trail.
Although most of the routes are open, pedestrians still need to continue carefully due to the ongoing issues with the rutted and damaged parts.
CatalooChee camping and picnic areas remain closed
There are still closure of visitors to note, and that include CatalooChee Horse Camp, camping and camping.
“Camps, group camps, and horse camps in Cataloochee are now closed. The park will open additional camps if the operating capacity allows,” the National Park Service said.
Some cataloochee routes are also closed to horses due to tree fragments and unstable areas.

Currently, visitors have many alternatives to Laurel Falls routes, including Baskins Creek Trail, Cove Hardwood Nature Trail, and Cove Mountain Trail to Catarak Falls, together with more.
